Friendship Club

At the first meeting of the New Year, Friendship Club of Port Washington was able to present a Bible to each of their 36 members. The organization has been fortunate to receive donations from community groups. After the teaching materials were purchased for this year, there were sufficient funds remaining for the purchase of the Bibles. Because the lessons during the twice-monthly meetings are based on Bible stories, it was appropriate for each of our developmentally disabled members to have their own Bible. The Bibles are illustrated and all persons will be able to follow along regardless of their reading ability.

The groups who have donated so generously this year are Christ the King Lutheran Church in Port Washington, the Knights of Columbus – Ozaukee Council 2035, Port Washington Leathernecks Club, Port Washington Lions Club, also the Tom Foster and Harold Preisler families. We are most grateful for their support of our program.

The Friendship Club is an ecumenical Bible study/social group for developmentally disabled adults. It meets twice monthly in the activity center at St. Peter of Alcantara. It is an off-shoot of the special religious education program of St. Peter/St. Mary. When the students finished their school program, the group was expanded to include other special needs members from the surrounding community. Each student is paired with a volunteer/mentor from their particular Christian faith. Friendship Club has grown from the original membership of 12 students in 1989 to the present number of 36. Of course, it wouldn’t be successful without the caring involvement of the 36 volunteers.
