Social Justice: Embracing a Vision for the Common Good
By St Mary Administrator @ 10:56 AM :: 252 Views :: Article Rating :: Human Concerns

“Democracy serves what is true and right when it safeguards the dignity of every human person, when it respects inviolable and inalienable human rights, when it makes the common good the end and criterion regulating all public and social life.” (Pope John Paul II). The concept of the common good is literally under fire today, for as a people, we are enmeshed in a rabid individualism and self-centeredness. As a democratic society, we are called to value what is good for all of us in common. As faithful Catholics who live in this crucial time in our nation’s history, we understand that Catholic values and the social teachings of the Church unequivocally call us to a public agenda rooted in the common good, as we seek to shed light on the great moral matters of our day, including poverty, family insecurity, inequities in education and healthcare, war, torture and the looming crisis of global climate change. The common good thus becomes an important framework for engaging in political and cultural discernment on these urgent issues.
