When you purchase Scrip, you are pre-purchasing gift cards. Businesses that are part of this program range from local grocery stores to national retailers, airlines, restaurants, and hotel chains. Each business gives back a different percentage on the purchase amount. The percentages range from 2% to 20%.
Best Buy, for example, currently participates in this program. It gives back 2% of your total bill if your purchase is made with Scrip. If you purchase a television for $900, $18 will be sent to Port Catholic. $9 is put into your account and $9 goes to the school. American Airlines also participates in this program. It gives back 16% of the total amount purchased. If your family goes on a trip and the airfare is $1,200, $192 goes to Port Catholic to be split between your account and the school, if purchased with Scrip.
In past years, Scrip families and Port Catholic have earned as much as $25,000. Some individual families have accumulated as much as $500 for tuition reduction. Money accumulated in your account can be used yearly, or it can be “banked” for a later time. At the end of each fiscal school year, you will receive an account statement indicating the amount you have accumulated for tuition reduction. If using this to offset Port Catholic tuition, this is noted on the tuition invoice. Those of you who are using Scrip to offset tuition for another institution, will receive a check in summer made out to you and the designated institution.
If you do not have a child in need of tuition reduction, you may choose to help reduce the tuition of a grandchild, niece, nephew, godchild, cousin, neighbor, or someone else in need of tuition assistance.
The Port Catholic Scrip program operates on an in-stock basis, on a per-order basis, or on a standing order basis. Port Catholic maintains a certain amount of Scrip in stock. This is intended for people who want to use Scrip for certain last minute or smaller monetary purchases. In-stock purchases can be made at Port Catholic during Scrip office hours or at Goosey’s Galley, a local eatery, during normal business hours.
Regular SCRIP orders must be made one week in advance by completing an order form. The SCRIP order is then processed and the cards are ordered. SCRIP cards are delivered the following Thursday. Customers may then pay for and pick up their order.
Scrip may also be automatically ordered weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly. In this case, you must fill out a standing order form indicating from which businesses you would like to receive Scrip on a regular basis. This Scrip is also delivered each Thursday. You pay for Scrip when you pick up your order. Scrip order forms may be picked up in the Port Catholic’s Scrip Office, at the back of St. Mary’s or St Peter’s, or downloaded from Port Catholic’s website at www.portcatholic.org.
Port Catholic’s Scrip Program really is an easy way to manage education expenses and help Port Catholic at the same time. Even if you can’t benefit from a tuition reduction program, you probably know someone who can. Give it a try. Using Scrip to make ordinary purchases can have extraordinary results.
