This Wednesday will be the 7th concert in our series celebrating the 300th anniversary of the death of Dietrich Buxtehude, the greatest organist and composer in Germany before Bach. In addition to Her Lady's Singers and Orchestra, Dr. Kerala Snyder will join us to talk about Buxtehude, and in particular his cantata cycle "Membra Jesu", which will be performed complete. The cycle is based on Latin poetry, long attributed to St. Bernard, which contemplates the crucified body of Jesus. This same poetry served as the basis for the Holy Week hymn "O Sacred Head Surrounded". Dr. Snyder is professor emerita of musicology at the University of Rochester, the author of "Dietrich Buxtehude: Organist in Lubeck", and editor of the complete works of Buxtehude. She has been in great demand this year for the Tercentenary observances of Buxtehude both in the U.S. and in Europe. The concert begins at 7:00 PM and is free and open to all.
