Yet there is no concept of replacement here, since Jesus’ kingship is of a different order than that of the few remaining earthly kings and queens. Rather than a ruler, Samuel qualifies God’s king as a shepherd, and Paul uses the image of the head (of a body). In both cases, head and shepherd care for the others. As usual, God’s Word tries to re-focus our attention, since our human vocabulary doesn’t express well God’s reality. Kingship is seen as a role one plays for the benefit of others. Kingship isn’t about the king, it’s about service.
So, as we “go rejoicing to the house of God” as the psalm this week and next says, we look for opportunities to help others, to build up the body of the Church, to spend our lives for another’s benefit. That might be the best preparation for the birth of the King of Kings!
