Last week’s answer to the question is it is both a song and the twelve days after Christmas.

There is a story that goes along with the song, it is not just a nonsensical song about gifts. It is said that it was also used to teach the Faith at a time when Catholics could not openly practice their faith. Parents used the song as an underground catechism. Talk about what it would be like to not be able to go to church or even speak about being Catholic without fearing for your life.

A Partridge in a Pear tree… My true love is God, The partridge in the pear tree is Jesus and the tree stands for the cross he died on.

Two turtle doves… The Old and the New Testament.

Three French hens… the three theological virtues, faith, hope, and charity.

Four Calling Birds… the four evangelists- Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.

Five Gold Rings… the five books of the Old Testament.

Six Geese a-Laying… the six days of creation.
Seven swans a-Swimming… The seven gifts of the Holy Spirit, piety, fortitude, knowledge, understanding, wisdom, counsel, fear of the Lord.

Eight Maids a-Milking… the eight Beatitudes.

Nine Ladies Dancing… the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit, love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.

Ten Lords a-Leaping… the Ten Commandments.

Eleven Pipers Piping… the eleven faithful Apostles.

Twelve drummers drumming… the twelve points of the Apostle’s Creed, God the father, Jesus the Son, Incarnation, his passion, the Resurrection, Ascension into Heaven, judgment, the Holy Spirit, Catholic Church, forgiveness of sins, resurrection of the body, life everlasting This may only be a legend, but it is a fun and creative way to talk to your children about our faith.

This week’s question The wise men arrived on Christmas Day to give Baby Jesus his gifts. True or False.
