As the practice of cremation becomes the choice of more Catholics, offered here are a few clarifications regarding funeral rites.

Ideally, the body of the deceased should not be cremated until after the funeral liturgy has taken place. Number 419 of the Order of Christian Funerals Appendix states: “ At the conclusion of the funeral liturgy, the Rite of Final Commendation and Farewell takes place.” Prayers after Death and the Vigil for the Deceased may be adapted, as appropriate, and used for the funeral liturgy if cremation has already occurred.

The same respect given to a decedent’s body is to be given to the cremated remains. This means that the cremated remains are not to be scattered or kept in the home of a relative or friend; they are to be given the same reverent disposition that the Church requires for a body-burial in a grave or mausoleum niche.
