Scripture Reflection

Then today’s Gospel shows us that Jesus had precisely that power, and exercised it on behalf of those whom he loved. Because of it, he was executed. Now, how could someone with power over death allow himself to be murdered? Surely Superman will show up in time and save him! That is the myth we want to believe. But Jesus shows us another way to understand life and death. Death is the way to LIFE, if we die for others. A bloody death is not at issue, although his was. Rather, believing that God will restore life to us as was done for Jesus (in Romans), allows us to live our lives for others, and receive the same reward as Jesus. The question must be: do we really believe that God has and uses that power, or do we think that the Gospel is a fairy-tale? Today we are challenged to take that leap of faith and believe that Someone will catch us before we fall.
