The teachings of St. Robert Bellarmine on democracy were known to Thomas Jefferson. The book containing Bellarmine’s teachings used by Jefferson can be found in the Library of Congress today. The tyrannical Kings of England and other enlightened despots of Europe banned the writings of Bellarmine. The principles of democratic government enshrined in the Declaration of Independence and the American Constitution are found to some degree in the teachings of Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274) and all of them are found in the writings and teachings of two great Jesuits, Robert Bellarmine (1524-1621) and Francisco Suarez (1546-1617). The teachings of these philosophers on democracy and human rights were know to Jefferson, Madison, and other members of the Continental Congress.
