Moving Beyond Race

However, we do not have to be controlled by our feelings! Fr. Bryan Massingale, associate professor of theology at Marquette University, wrote about how we move beyond race in a column in the Milwaukee Journal this past March: “In my classroom, I have witnessed the transformative power of love. My experience teaching about racial justice shows that when people are able to confront their fears and anxieties with understanding and without condemnation, they can move beyond them. We can’t help how we fee, but we can decide not to be controlled by our feelings.”
We had the freedom to vote in the past election as we see best, but if we profess to be Christians, we are forbidden to hate because of the color of someone’s skin. The Catholic Catechism makes this clear: “Deliberate hatred is contrary to charity...Hatred of the neighbor is a grave sin when one deliberately desires him grave harm.”
Jesus has the last word: “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for justice; they shall have their fill,” and again, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God.” (Mt. 5:6;9)
