SOCIAL JUSTICE: January 1 – World Peace Day
By St Mary Administrator @ 1:59 PM :: 163 Views :: Article Rating :: Social Justice

On January 1, World Peace Day is observed. How can we achieve peace? By working together, we can construct a sustainable peace, a sustainable economy, and a sustainable environment. It will take all of us to achieve a world free of war and the threat of war.

Each of us can make a difference by calling, writing or emailing our legislators on important issues like arms control, nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament. We can ask our leaders to bring home the troops we maintain (at considerable expense) in 140 countries. We can urge our government to sign the cluster bombs treaty (which many other countries have already signed) and encourage the peaceful prevention and resolution of deadly conflict through diplomacy. Most importantly of all, we must use our wealth to end the global poverty that fuels war through development assistance, hunger programs and respect for human dignity and families.

This prayer for peace is adapted from the Roman Missal:

Lord, our God
You have given all peoples one common origin,
And your will is to gather them as one family in Yourself.
Fill the hearts of all with the fire of your love and the desire
to ensure justice for all their brothers and sisters.
By sharing the good things you give us
may we secure justice and equality of every human being,
an end to all division,
and a human society built on love and peace. Amen.
