The Magi visit Jesus today in the Gospel. We do not know a lot about the Magi. They came from the East, they followed an astrological sign, and we think there were three of them because of the three gifts mentioned in the Gospel. In Matthew’s gospel they represent the Gentile’s search for Jesus, and because of this they also represent our search for Jesus.

The gifts brought by the Magi are believed to have a special meaning. Gold represents Jesus’ kingship. Frankincense is a symbol of divinity, the priests often burned frankincense in the Temple. Finally myrrh represents Jesus’ death for us because myrrh is used to prepare the dead for burial.

This week talk as a family about the best gift you have received this holiday season. Why was it so special? What was the best gift you gave and why?

Have a blessed week and Happy New Year!
