St. Mary’s will celebrate the 350th anniversary of the birth of Henry Purcell, and the 250th anniversary of the death of George Frederic Handel with of concert of music by these two giants of English music on Sunday, May 31 at 7:00 PM.
Purcell was the last great native-born English composer until the 20th Century. In his short life-span (36 years) he wrote an enormous amount of outstanding music. The concert will offer vocal and instrumental music featuring the St. Mary’s Boychoir, other vocalists, strings, and cornets and sackbuts-the brass choir of the era.

The St. Mary’s Choir will perform excerpts from Handel’s “Messiah”, including a solo by Linda Guokas. Also programmed will be two German vocal works (on religious poetry) sung by Anna Freier and Susan Kruske, accompanied by flute and oboe, harpsichord and cello. Handel was of course German-born, and lived a while in Italy. He moved to England to compose Italian Opera. But eventually opera became passé, and Handel developed the Oratorio form, of which “Messiah” is the most famous, if also the least typical. The concert will close with organist Drew Rutz performing Handel’s Organ Concerto #13, the “Cuckoo and the Nightingale” with orchestra. The performance is free and open to the public.
