SOCIAL JUSTICE: A Commemoration
By St Mary Administrator @ 8:17 AM :: 59 Views :: Article Rating :: Social Justice

On March 24, the Church will commemorate the 30th anniversary of Archbishop of El Salvador Oscar Romero’s martyrdom. As part of this observance, Catholics are invited to reflect upon their own Christian witness to the Good News. Archbishop Romero, pastor, prophet and friend of the people of El Salvador, openly proclaimed in word and deed Jesus’ message of liberation for all, and he paid the price of that witness through his murder. Like many great leaders who speak truth, he was killed for daring to speak that truth.

As with many Central American countries, El Salvador was a national security state, a country where the military is accountable to no one and the people are defenseless against tyranny and oppression. There was no peace. In the face of this injustice, Romero took it upon himself to use the Church as a light of hope and to challenge the oppressors.

Before his death, Archbishop Romero said, “I must tell you, as a Christian, I do not believe in death without resurrection. If I am killed, I shall arise in the Salvadoran people!” They believe he has.
