Earth Day, 2010: 40 Years Later

In God’s great plan, as we take care of the needs of the earth, it will in turn take care of our needs. It is this relationship, this connection to the environment that is so little understood among many of our people, and which we often do not pass on to our children. Earthkeeping, or bal tashchit (a prominent Jewish teaching) implies a caring relationship and harmony between humans and creation. The big question is whether we have been given enough knowledge, understanding and wisdom to live rightly on the earth, in part by living lightly on the earth, and not destroying or wasting what God has carefully and lovingly brought into being.

Today’s families need to reclaim the concept of living in harmony with the earth that nurtures us, to reconnect to the natural world. Too often, this natural world is less real to them than the high-tech atmosphere in which they spend many hours. More than ever, adults and children alike need to find out the joy and satisfaction in spending more time in the world right outside their doorstep, to learn the names of vegetables, herbs and fruits they grow for themselves, to take an interest in the species of flora and fauna with which we share the planet. When they do, materials things and worries about money begin to lose their power. After all, we are all in this together! Happy Earth Day – may we learn to make very day Earth Day!
