Summer with the Saints!

This week’s Saint is St. Marguerite Bourgeoys!
A young woman from France sailed to Montreal in 1652. She endured many hardships on her journey including having to change ships because the one she was on was sinking. She came to teach children in the new world across the sea. Her first school was an old stable with dirt floors. She taught 7 children there and lived there with 3 native girls. Soon other women came to dedicate their lives to teaching the children. When the bishop of Quebec came to visit the school he recognized them as an order. They were called the Congregation of the Sisters of Notre Dame of Montreal. After many years of teaching Mother Marguerite died on January 17, 1700, but her order continued to grow. By 1956 there were four thousand sisters in 7 countries. She was canonized by Pope John Paul II on October 31, 1982. Her feast day is January 12.
Have a Blessed Week!
