This week's Saint is St. Frances Xavier Cabrini
Francesca Cabrini was born in Italy in 1850, she was the 13th child in her family. From her early childhood she dreamed of being a missionary in China. She applied at two convents and was turned down by both because of poor health. Finally a bishop suggested that since she was interested in missionary work she should start an order of missionary sisters. She did, it was called the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart. She worked in Italy running orphanages until 1889. Pope Leo XIII asked her to go to the U.S. to help the Italian immigrants. Even though her dream was to go to China she did as she was asked. How lucky for the United States. In an incredibly short time she opened orphanages, hospital, and convents. She had no funds, but worked tirelessly to raise funds and knew that God would provide. In 1909 she became a U.S. citizen. She continued her work until her death in 1917, despite threats to her when WW I started and the continuing lack of funds. Her order continued to grow and run institutions in both the U.S. and South America. She is the first U.S. citizen to become a saint. Her feast day is November 13. Have a Blessed Week!
