Labor Day is the day we honor America’s hard-working men and women, who have helped build our great nation and remain the backbone of our economy and our hope for the future.
Labor Day is not just another day off, an extended weekend marking the end of summer. Labor Day also has a threefold moral significance. First, it is the principal way that people exercise the distinctive human capacity for self-expression and self-realization. Second, it is the ordinary way for human beings to fulfill their material needs. Finally, work enables people to contribute to the wellbeing of the larger community. Work is not only for oneself. It is for one’s family, for the nation, and indeed for the benefit of the entire human family.
That’s why the actions of the New Hampshire legislature are so repugnant – The legislature, claiming that those who are paid minimum wage ($7.25) are “not worth the help”, has completely repealed it!
As we gather with our families to celebrate this uniquely American holiday, let’s reflect on the importance of work of all kinds and the working people who perform it. “Lord, give success to the work of our hands.” (Ps. 127)
