SOMETHING NEW ABOUT THE MASS

For many: One of the more controversial pieces of the New Roman Missal comes from the new translation of “This is the cup of my blood which will be shed for you and for all so that sins may be forgiven.” In the New Roman Missal with its emphasis on a literal translation of the Latin, “for all” will be changed to “for many.”
Besides being closer to the Latin, this wording can be found in the gospels of Matthew and Mark as they speak of the Last Supper. Here we find Jesus speaking directly to those who are gathered around the table - "for you and for many." In this context we find Jesus talking not only to those present at the Last Supper but to a larger group not present.
We should be sure to note that this updated translation does not change the dogmatic teaching of our Church that Christ died for ALL. Pope Benedict XVI has explained this by saying that “for many” helps us see that salvation is not automatic but requires our participation in the form of accepting the gift we have been given.
