| In a nut shell: Stem cells are the building blocks of our cells, found throughout the human body. Currently we hear about three kinds: Adult, umbilical and embryonic. With embryonic stem cells, a living human embryo (frozen or newly created) must be destroyed to obtain the cells. The embryo, which is at the earliest stage of life, is only several days old. Adult stem cells come from a person's own body, and no one has to die to retrieve the adult cells. The umbilical stem cells are taken from the cord blood when a baby is born, so no problem there. |
