For the last 200 years gifted scholars in Europe and America have learned more about the Bible than was found for thousands of years before. They studied the languages in which it was written and the ancient cultures from which it came. A new way of analyzing and interpreting the biblical text has been discovered and perfected. At first Catholics and other Christians backed off, Pope Leo XIII broke the ice with a cautious appreciation. Pope Pius XII, in 1943 wrote a document called “Through the Inspiration of the Holy Spirit”, saying that Catholic Scholars should employ the tools of modern biblical research. The right to baptism involves three duties: to learn the faith, to live the faith, to bear witness to the faith. Since we have the tradition of infant baptism, the parents must know this and be willing to fulfill these duties. If the parents are ignorant of this or just not doing what they are supposed to, baptism is tragic: for the child, who will not grow in virtue; for the parents, who are faithless; for the church (that is, Christ) which is being deceived.
