A REFLECTION ON EARTH DAY, 2008
By St Mary Administrator @ 9:44 AM :: 124 Views :: Article Rating :: Human Concerns
Ecologists insist that the health of our planet depends as much on millions of personal
decisions made every day as on public policies, to reduce consumption of nonrenewable resources. In other words, survival of life on Earth calls for true conversion to the spirit of “deep ecology” by living the consistent life ethic for all the unborn to come. “Christians in particular realize that their responsibility within creation and their duty towards nature and the Creator are an essential part of their faith.” (Pope John Paul II)

Respecting Life- Through the generosity of the parishioners of both parishes, the Mission of outreach, and genuine kindness to others, has been overwhelming. It is quite apparent that the parishioners of St. Mary's and St. Peter's do recognize that Respecting Life comes in many forms, from the unborn, to those in need, to those who can no longer share the Mass with us. But, what is so inspiring, is the giving that is done all year long!

SOCIAL JUSTICE: Advent: Being Rooted in God’s Gracious Presence
By St Mary Administrator @ 8:04 AM :: 149 Views :: Article Rating :: Human Concerns
“Black Friday” has come and gone, and many of us are still faced with the chore of getting the “right” gifts for the people we love. We are weary before we even begin, as we step foot on the Christmas treadmill, “shop til you drop”. Advent is given to us as a time of waiting and longing for the coming of Jesus, but we have turned it into a commercial marathon which both exhausts and troubles us. There is a better way, and we can find it. Here are some ideas and questions about excess consumption we can discuss with our families:

By St Mary Administrator @ 11:36 AM :: 94 Views :: Article Rating :: Human Concerns
This weekend, envelopes have been placed in the pew, for donation of money to be used towards the purchase of poinsettias for those who are homebound or in nursing homes from our parish. SOCIAL JUSTICE: “Nukes Forever?”
By St Mary Administrator @ 10:20 AM :: 138 Views :: Article Rating :: Human Concerns
Ever heard of Complex 2030? Not been on the news much.

The Administration is pushing a new investment in U.S. nuclear weapons: Complex 2030, which seeks a new $150 billion investment to upgrade the entire U.S. nuclear weapons complex by 2030 and to ensure the usability and enduring role of these immoral weapons for the indefinite future. The entire nuclear arsenal will be replaced over the next 25 years with new “Reliable Replacement Warheads”. This stands as a repudiation of our obligation under Article VI of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty to end the arms race at an early date and to negotiate ‘in good faith” the elimination of the nuclear arsenal.

SOCIAL JUSTICE: Trade Week of Action, October 14-21
By St Mary Administrator @ 9:19 AM :: 213 Views :: Article Rating :: Human Concerns
"The field of the poor may yield much food, but is swept away through injustice."
(Proverbs 13:23)

What is free trade? Free trade is trade within and between countries that is free from government intervention - no limits on trade. Those who favor free trade says it is the best way for markets to grow and provide a route out of poverty for poor countries. However, this concept works only for trade between equal players where no one has control of the system. While rich countries have imposed free trade on poor countries, they have not applied it to themselves when it did not suit them, and have rather intervened in markets, provided subsidies and protection for their own producers, and promoted their own interests. The result has been sustained injustice and hunger in poor countries.

COSMIC CONTEMPLATION AND THE CANTICLE OF CREATION

A Promise to One Another and to Our Sister, Earth
and to all our sisters and brothers everywhere
in this time of withering, and confusion
in this time of transformation and indescribable grace.

Each day in gratitude we come together in a circle so
much larger than ourselves,
grounded in the sacredness of the unfolding cosmos
And sustained by the Loving Source of all that is.

With hearts broken open we pray, for vision
that clears our sight to recognize the Light and
Goodness that flow in abundance this day
In every situation, every place, and within
every created being;

SOCIAL JUSTICE: Cancel Debt Fast
By St Mary Administrator @ 4:01 PM :: 87 Views :: Article Rating :: Human Concerns
This year marks a biblical “Sabbath year” since it falls seven years after the last Jubilee year. As part of the Sabbath year directive for prayer, fasting and reflection, Jubilee USA’s central event for 2007 is a 40-day Cancel Debt Fast, which calls for cancellation of debt and an end to world poverty. The fast is taking place now to October 15, and is a project of the Jubilee USA Network, an alliance of many religious denominations and faith communities, human rights, environmental labor and community groups. The network works for the definitive cancellation of crushing debts to fight poverty and injustice in Asia, Africa and Latin America.

SOCIAL JUSTICE: Breaking Faith with Nuclear Weapons
By St Mary Administrator @ 8:06 AM :: 126 Views :: Article Rating :: Human Concerns
“In a nuclear war, there can be no victors, only victims.” (Pope Benedict XVI)

This month marks the 62nd anniversary of the U.S. nuclear attacks on Japan. This year also marks the return of the U.S. to a buildup of new nuclear weapons. The U.S. presently has more than 10,000 nuclear warheads, yet our government is proposing a 150 billion dollar overhaul of U.S. nuclear weapons to restore production capability to Cold War levels, and develop a new “Reliable” Replacement Warhead, despite the fact that our arsenal is still quite reliable as well as sufficient to kill everyone on the planet many times over.

By St Mary Administrator @ 10:08 AM :: 100 Views :: Article Rating :: Human Concerns

Two hundred years ago, British politician, William Wilberforce, took on powerful forces to end the slave trade. Millions of men, women and children around the world are still enslaved; children are particularly suffering:

Respecting Life -- 34 Years later
By St Mary Administrator @ 1:43 PM :: 160 Views :: Article Rating :: Human Concerns

During the month of January, we remember with sadness, the 34th anniversary of legalized abortion on demand, in this country, and mourn the loss of over 47 million of our children. Today, we have the capability of saving even the tiniest of babies--as early as 21 weeks, in addition to surgeries within the womb for unborn babies, with Spina bifida or heart conditions. Use of cord blood and adult stem cells, which the Catholic Church supports and which does not destroy life, has been very promising.--over 70 successes. Embryonic stem cells, which destroys human life, and carries grave and moral concerns, has not been used to treat even one person. It is a matter of life vs. death. Stay informed. Below are listed some opportunities to recognize life
